Kirkland's human focused photography builds narratives between single images and collections of media. His reliance on analogue techniques lends itself to the slower process by which he works, building trust and connection with people he's met, developing a more nuanced image as a result. This connection to his subjects started with photographing friends, and has expanded to his interactions with strangers around the world. His photographic practice allows him to see and understand the world through a different set of eyes, and connect with people who he otherwise might not've met.
Having started working in photo labs before even picking up a camera, the analogue process was part of his development as a photographer. These techniques have been expanded over time to include a range of skills, from silver gelatine printing, to studio lighting. This broad skillset is reflected in the range of photography he has produced.
Kirkland is a founding member and the Director of Photography of NEGATIVLAND Magazine.
